The Brazilian footwear manufacturers are betting on the Middle East. After participating at the Foot Wear Expo 2008 in Dubai last November, now they take off towards Expo Riva Schuh Middle East from the 9th to the 11th February 2009, at Expo Centre Sharjah.  Sapatoterapia, the brand that will promote green-yellow shoes in the United Arab Emirates through the Brazilian Footwear - Footwear Exportations Promotion Program, developed by Abicalçados (Brazilian Footwear Industries Association).

"We don’t make high projections of sales for being on a small fair, but we are intensifying the actions in this market", notes Juliana Kauer, Marketing Executive of Brazilian Footwear. "It is a region of high purchasing power and the production of footwear is very small, not covering the demand", she says. Furthermore, she explains that through the constant participation in regional events, the Brazilian footwear may set in terms of commercial relations. "We're still in the beginning of the process because it is the second shoe tradeshow we come in the region, but the tendency is this market expanding trade relations with Brazil", she emphasizes.

EXPECTATION - The exhibitors are excited for the Arab market. According to Sapatoterapia, the expectation is excellent, since its collection is aligned in accordance with the taste of local consumers. Sapatoterapia, intends to foster good business relationship with importers from the region. The company, located in the State of São Paulo, is specialized in men’s leather shoes of high quality. 

Sapatoterapia combines to the exclusive design of its collections, techniques carefully developed by obstinate professionals, for the comffort of feet.  These techniques compose the “Sapatoterapia Comfort System”. Based on a constant evolution of the products, new techniques will gather to the making the line of styles each time more appropriate to the men’s feet.

MARKET - Brazil exported to the Middle East, from January to October this year, 3.1 million pairs (three times the total shipments of 2007, when a million pairs were sent to this market) at an average price of US$ 10.25, generating revenue of US$ 32.5 million. According to Abicalçados’ data, the region has 2.49 percent of the total exported by the sector. The UAE were the main buyers with one million pairs

The Middle East has around 270 million inhabitants, distributed in 15 countries: Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Syria and Turkey.

However, due to its influence and specific characteristics, some other countries directly or indirectly involved in issues related to the Middle East may be included, even if they extrapolate the geographical boundaries of the countries listed above. This is the case of Pakistan, of Africa’s North and Northeast (Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti and Sudan) and the former Soviet now Islam republics (Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan).

The UAE has only eight factories, which together produce 250 thousand pairs per year. The commerce of footwear is divided into 30% of women’s footwear, 30% of men’s shoes and 40% of children's footwear. From 2000 to 2005, the importation of shoes in the UAE tripled, from 56 million euros to 158 million euros. Typically, the sales agents or importers are also distributors of the products. The consumption is four to five pairs per capita and leather shoes represent almost half of sales. The remaining ones are divided among plastic, rubber and fabric shoes. The internal market in the region's countries (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman) is estimated at US$ 1 billion.
